BABU BHAI - THE WATCH REPAIRER

Dozens of tiny screwdrivers, screws and wheels, complex network of springs, hundreds of different types of batteries, boxes of watch straps and a dizzying assortment of watch parts are carefully ordered around the shop. Watch remaking and repairing is a very difficult task in which a person gets stuck for several seconds, minutes and hours until the work is done but Babu bhai can just done it in within minutes because he is a man with time on his hands.

Babu bhai, a 60 year old watch repairer, leaned on a bench within his small watch repair shop which is located at the small area of gulshan-e-iqbal block 19. The surrounding areas of his shop were equipped with different low-rise residential buildings where the streets are quite dusty. The ongoing traffic and hustle bustle of people within the surrounding areas was making it a noisy place throughout the day.

His popular words to his customers and people come to them are:

“I understand the importance of your watch - a very sentimental thing in the lives of most people. Some, it was a gift from a loved one, some of them - a gift for retirement or graduation gift, and some - a gift from yourself. So, if you bring me your watch, I'll look in front of you. If it is a simple solution, spend time to fix it on the spot, so you do not need to keep the clock. If you need to get out of your watch, I want you to feel that you have chosen the most honest man to come out of it.”

Babu Bhai, whose real name is Fazal Raheem, 60, was born in Karachi and spent his entire life in Karachi..

“Nothing is strange in me. I'm married, I have children, i love my work and i’ll continue it till the time I can, may be till my last breath (with a smile).”

.

He studied till the ninth class then he left the school because of some family and financial issues. His uncle asked him to get some skills and start his own work. Somehow, he managed to learn watch repairing. He worked at many places and polished his skills and before 23 years he setup his own small cabin at the end of the street to repair watches. His life got on to the track, slowly and gradually. But few days ago, he got heart attack, his family admitted him to hospital, after spending 6 days he came back to home and the very next day he wanted to start his watch repairing work which he loved the most but his son refused him to do so and can’t permit him to go.

Babu bhai said, “I work hard so my children could get good future. Earlier, my work was my need but now my work is my passion, my hobby and I love it.”

As Babu Bhai softly remembering his old times, a customer came, I needed a new leash. Babu bhai took a box and carefully measured each time trial.

The man left, and babu bhai sat back at his workplace with a silence and said.

Although the watch repair is "dying trade", it quickly calls good. In addition, he said that "I will always have business." People still need glasses, batteries and daily maintenance. Everyone should have a firm belief on ALLAH. ALLAH helps everyone, he gives everyone a respectable source of earning and we must have to beg to him about anything.

My work is so difficult as there are so many tiny particles set together to form a watch. But now I am master in my work. I see a watch and instantly told that if it could be repaired or be able to set up again or not. That is just because I love my work, my work is my passion. He advised , “Whatever you do, do it with passion or in fair terms. Work hard no matter what happens surely you will succeed.”

He narrated beautifully

Allah helps people and make ways for them but HE also want HIS people to make efforts for what they want, earn fair and halal and obey HIM. Whoever, can agree ALLAH through his good deeds, everything is easier for him. When I come to work in morning, I have no idea about that day’s earning but I trust Allah. I believe that HE will make ways for me through invisible hands and HE never dishearten me. By the grace of Allah, I earn good and enough.
